Browse in Playback - Hulu, Web Platform

Overview

There’s currently no way to browse related on-demand content or recommendations from within the Web player. To pivot content mid-playback, people have to either enter PIP mode or exit the player fully. At the end of a series or movie, the end card provides only one suggestion for what to watch next.

With the launch of this feature, the Web player will contain a new surface area that allows people to browse for shows and movies without needing to exit out. Both familiar and unfamiliar content will be accessible. The page will feature a set number of collections featuring personalized suggestions based on the content that is currently playing combined with the viewer’s watch history.

To make deciding what to watch an easier process, the recommendation prompts (ex: “For Action Drama Fans”) have been improved and a synopsis section has been inserted into the context menu. People will now be able to read a brief summary of the content without needing to access a full details page.

As the lead designer on this project, I worked closely with Product, Tech, Legal, Research, Design Systems, and Copy. I designed the feature end-to-end, launched a remote usability study through Usertesting.com, synthesized the findings, and wrote the technical specs.
