Listen to the Soundtrack - Hulu, Design Hackathon

Overview

For the Product Design Hackathon, I independently created designs for a concept feature that makes it easy for viewers to discover and enjoy Spotify playlists associated with the content they love. Fans of shows, like “High Fidelity” and “I May Destroy You”, often ask people on social media if they know the names of songs that showed up in episodes throughout the season. In researching this, I was surprised to learn that Spotify actually has many official playlists set up for different TV shows, including Hulu’s own originals. Since this information is not well known, many fans take to making their own playlists. The concept feature I thought of would eliminate the need to do such work.

For the Web experience, I visualized adding a “Listen to Soundtrack” action at the top of the details page. Clicking on the action would bring up a brief information card with details about the playlist. People could then listen to the soundtrack either through Spotify’s Desktop or Web app. If someone wanted to listen on the go with their phone, they could scan the image code using the Spotify app, which would then pull up the playlist for them automatically. For those watching content using a Living Room device, I figured that the best time to share details about the music or playlist would be during the end card experience at the end of an episode or series finale.

Following the hackathon, I brought together individuals from Product, Tech, Design, and Originals Marketing to see how we could launch this concept feature as a test with an upcoming show or movie release. I plan on continuing conversations with cross-team partners to see if this could be added to the roadmap.
